Welcome to the Peninsula Family Service blog! This blog is managed and written by the staff of Peninsula Family Service. We get the chance to see the amazing impact the organization makes every day firsthand, and we hope you get a glimpse of that through this blog!

In case you don’t know about Peninsula Family Service yet, here’s a small description:

Peninsula Family Service, a nonprofit organization headquartered in San Mateo, California, has provided life-changing skills and resources for communities throughout the Peninsula for more than 60 years. Serving nearly 20,000 people annually, Peninsula Family Service provides a comprehensive array of programs – in multiple languages – to children, families and older adults in order to empower them to become self-sufficient and lead enriching, productive lives. Learn more at www.peninsulafamilyservice.org.

We have four main program areas.

  • Child Development: Children are like sponges—they soak up information! The first five years in a child’s life are the most important for learning and development—particularly with regards to social, emotional and motor skills.  Our programs help children reach their developmental milestones, and we teach parents how to support their children’s learning at home.  Through fun activities, we help children develop a lifetime love of learning and prepare them for success in school and in life.
  • Family Services: Healthy family interaction is important, especially for young children. Sometimes families need a little help with that, and we step in to offer support. For families that are separated or divorced, we offer visitation services to help maintain the bonds between the non-custodial parent and the children. We also provide therapeutic visits in which we teach parents how to have healthy interactions with their kids, safe exchanges to help avoid family conflict when kids are moving between parents and classes to help parents learn how to minimize the negative impacts of divorce.
  • Financial Empowerment: When life gives you lemons, it can be hard to make lemonade—even that takes money! We offer several programs that help people achieve and maintain financial stability, including money management classes, programs to assist parents with securing a low-interest car loan and ways to save for financial emergencies.
  • Older Adult Services: Life after retirement is life full of opportunity in the Peninsula Family Service Older Adult program. We offer peer to peer counseling services and career assistance, not to mention lots of fun programs at our Fair Oaks Adult Activity Center: exercise opportunities, nutritious meals, preventative health screenings, and social engagements.

We offer programs in these four areas to promote healthy family members of all ages—from those that are just learning about life’s wonders to those that want to continue leading enriching, productive lives.
